StreetHockey
Ball and roller hockey on the blacktop. No zamboni. No refs. Just sticks, nets, and the raw concrete under your wheels.
The Setup
You don't need a rink. You need the right kit and a half-decent stretch of pavement. Here's what's essential.
- Street Hockey Ball — Orange low-bounce ball for hot temps, pink for cold. Never a puck on flat ground.
- Roller Blades or Quad Skates — Aggressive inlines for speed; quads for control on rough pavement.
- Street Hockey Stick — ABS blade. Forget composite outdoors — the asphalt will wreck it in a week.
- Shin Pads & Gloves — Road rash is real. Gear up or bleed. Simple.
- Nets / Pop-Up Goals — Milk crates, cones, or proper foldable street goals. Define your crease.
- Helmet — Non-negotiable if you're skating. Even the old-heads wear buckets now.
Rules of the Road
Car Beats Puck
Game stops for traffic. Always. No goal counts if a car interrupted the shot. No arguments.
Call Your Own Fouls
No refs means you call what hit you. If it's a 50/50, play on. Cry-babies don't get invited back.
Goalie Rotation
Rotate goalies every game or let the one who got scored on stay in. Keep it fair, keep it moving.
Board vs. No-Board
Agree before puck drop whether there are walls in play or not. Changes everything about positioning.
Crease Rules
No camping the crease. Mark it with chalk if you have to. Goalie interference — replay the goal.
Score Honor System
Keep your own count out loud. No scoreboard means honesty is the only scoreboard that matters.
Pickup Etiquette
Show Up with Your Stick Already Taped
Don't waste the crew's time prepping gear on the spot. Come ready to run.
Bring Extra Balls
Balls crack, go under cars, or vanish mid-game. The guy who brings extras earns permanent respect.
Even the Teams Before You Even Pick Captains
No stacking. If you know the best skater, split that accordingly. Blowouts kill sessions fast.
Respect the Spot
You didn't build the parking lot. Pick up your tape scraps, drink bottles, and broken gear. Leave it cleaner than you found it.
Next Goal Wins — Means It
When someone calls it, that's it. No sudden-death extension drama. Call the game and shake hands.
Great Goals
The moments that make the whole session worth it. Top-shelf on rollers. Behind-the-back off the boards. Pure street artistry on asphalt.
Top Shelf. No Goalie Had a Chance.
The kind of goal that shuts the whole court up for three seconds — then everybody goes wild.
